Transportation

Complicated measures have their place, but simple, elegant solutions are often the most effective. All forms of transportation will generate noise and vibration. This can include aviation, rail and roads. Impact from these can be quantified and where appropriate mitigation measures can be suggested.

Aviation

We undertake prediction, measurement, evaluation and assessment of all types of road, rail, air and sea transportation noise sources. Other related fields include motor racing event noise, railway station public address systems, airport building terminal design and any situation where noise will be a critical factor in the perceived quality of the project.

Marine

Our experience with large coastal industrial facilities has meant that we often have assessed marine noise. This has ranged from assessing the noise impact from large container ships on nearby housing, to underwater dredging noise affecting salmon fry as well as the affect of deliveries to new facilities near to Sites of Special Scientific Interest. 

This experience has allowed us to develop noise control strategies to minimise noise impact on the surrounding areas, both airborne and underwater, whilst maximising the potential for the marine project.

Rail

With increased fuel costs, more and more people and freight are being transported on our already busy rail networks. Due to the age and proximity to houses of our railways, noise can often be an issue for homeowners and businesses alike. 

We advise homeowners wanting to reduce noise in their houses near to railways, developers wanting to ensure that future homeowners can enjoy their homes to the greatest extent and business owners and landlords wanting to minimise disturbance to their employees and tenants. 

We regularly prepare noise and vibration reports as well as external building fabric advice with regard to glazing requirement at the pre-planning stage to accompany planning applications for new houses in brownfield sites near to rail links. 

Road

Vibration

Vibration is just like sound in air, but travelling through solid matter, much faster, and in a variety of different wave forms. OK, not that similar then, but it is another area in which we can offer considerable expertise in prediction, measurement and assessment. The most common sources are trains (both over and under ground) demolition equipment and piling; and we have also looked at tunnel boring machines, running machines and even fracking.
